The Book
In the beginning… There was Jack is a sweeping, intimate work of literary fictr told across two timelines: Billy as a boy of ten to sixteen, and as a man at thirty-seven. Set between Brighton, London, two small market towns in the Midlands, and the desert light of Phoenix, Arizona, it blends raw lived experience with cinematic storytelling.
As a child, Billy is caught in the chaos of his mother’s addiction, abandoned to decode adult worlds too soon. Rooms full of strangers blur into danger and belonging, while a brown leather bag, his mother’s, becomes a quiet talisman, something to hold when the ground begins to shift. Music and subculture call him forward, pulling him from silence into the rush of chosen family.
As a man, he is far from her, navigating fatherhood, therapy, and the chance to work on a film in Phoenix. Old wounds resurface in longing, in boundaries tested, and in the urge to fix, but so does the strength to stand in the life he builds. Honest, unsettling, and quietly life-affirming, In the beginning… There was Jack is about survival, love, and the slow work of healing: how early wounds echo across decades, and how we learn to hold the people we love and the parts of ourselves we once tried to outrun.
"Bill's book poured out of him with rare honesty, and I feel lucky to have read it before publication. This is truly a treat for the world" — Sif Svejgaard, editor & writing coach, Wordwiz.dk
